The Cougars 5th and 6th-grade boys' basketball team composed of St. James and St. Francis of Assisi boys, won a City Championship in a thrilling game that went into overtime.

The Cougars went down by 2 in the last minutes of the game in overtime.  Then St. James' player, Dylan Matheney, hit a three-pointer with less than a minute to play to put us up 21-20!  That last buzzer couldn't come fast enough, but it did, and we won!!!

There were so many great plays by all of the boys from both schools!  And they put their hearts and souls into the game.   We are so proud of them!!!  Congratulations!

Check out some pictures from the game:

Wellness Program
Offers Physical, Mental,
and Emotional Education

When students returned this school year to St. James School after more than a year of virtual learning, it was clear to the PE teacher that physical exercise and movement hadn’t been a priority.

Some students needed more than two minutes to catch their breaths after summiting the stairs, said Julie Mattingly, who leads the physical education program at the Highlands school.

Paired with the mental and emotional toll COVID-19 has had on children, Mattingly said, she knew something needed to be done.

Mattingly said students learn better when they’re mentally, physically and emotionally healthy, so she launched a Wellness Program to help the whole child.

The initiative has taken a three-pronged approach: a breakfast program, regular counseling sessions and increased focus on classes to support wellness — physical education and health sciences.

The week before Christmas break, St. James students and families collected items for the people devastated by the tornadoes in western Kentucky. Out of the goodness of their hearts, and being committed to doing God’s work on this earth, they collected over 1,100 items and cash. Mrs. Snapp, Director of Student Services, took the lead and promised the students she would personally deliver the items to Mayfield and Dawson Springs.

Having an overabundance of clothes, toiletries and other personal items, Mrs. Snapp could not fit everything into her car. She decided to make one trip on December 17 and go back with another load on December 18.

The following is Mrs. Snapp’s account of her trips to western Kentucky

December 17, 2021

“I have just dropped off the items we collected at school. I decided to give half to Dawson Springs and half to Mayfield. The two places are only 40 miles apart, so I was happy to drive to both places. I was in disbelief and overwhelmed with what I saw in person of the devastation of these two towns. The images on TV are unbelievable, but until you see it in person, it does not register. At the church in Dawson Springs, where I delivered some of the items, one of the volunteers invited me to come into the distribution center and see how everything was being given to the people. It was set up like a Costco or Sam’s. Unreal!!! He asked me to come in since I was delivering items from a school. He thought I would like to see it. Even Santa was there. The workers were overwhelmed with all of the items that St. James families collected. The baby diapers were very much needed. . . This was very emotional, especially when I saw families come in the center and to shop. Then to see the kids go up to Santa. . . Emotional. . . I am so glad we did this.”

Mrs. Snapp returned on December 20, 2021.

Mrs. Snapp returned to Dawson Springs and decided to spend the cash donated on baby items. The distribution center was closed, so she headed back to Mayfield “with the hope of finding a place there that will take what I have left in my car.

“I found two places to leave canned goods and other items, including a basket filled with baby items. The canned goods were left at the Baptist Church and all other items at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They were elated to get the items and by the fact they came from St. James School. . . I was not going to leave Mayfield until my car was emptied. And then to drive straight into the parking lot of St. Joseph Catholic Church when I wasn’t looking for it was a miracle. The destruction was even more overwhelming than the first time I saw it. I passed the fence in front of the City Hall with all the flowers and pictures dedicated to the lives lost in the tornado. It is so much to take in. It is too much to take in. Very emotional.”

St. James School provides students of different cultures a quality education in a Catholic, Christ-centered environment, emphasizing faith, service and love. We strive to provide a robust academic program designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners in a community where the unique gifts and talents of children are recognized and nurtured.
