Congratulations to these St. James graduates named below who have made a significant difference in the lives of their communities. Rev. James C. Maloney –Founder of Boys Haven – St. James class of 1925. Father Maloney was ordained in Rome in 1936, having received his theology degree from the Pontifical North American College. Returning to Louisville, he served as a chaplain at Ormsby Village, which inspired him to break ground on Boys Haven in 1948. Moved by hundreds of orphaned and abandoned boys, he opened the first cottage on the Goldsmith Lane campus in 1950. For over 70 years, his legacy has grown, expanded now to Boys & Girls Haven. Fr. Maloney died in 1998.
Frank W. Burke, JD – Mayor & Congressman– St. James class of 1934. Attended St. Xavier High School, Xavier University, and University of Louisville Law School. Remembered as a public servant who supported labor unions and pushed to integrate city government. Served in multiple city government posts and the state legislature, as well as two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1959 -1963). He was Mayor of Louisville from 1969- 1973. He died in 2007.
Beverly McAuliffe EdD – Educator – St. James class of 1958. Pursued undergraduate and graduate degrees from Brescia College and the University of Louisville. Earned Master’s degree from U. of L. and doctorate in Educational Leadership from Spalding University. Dr. McAuliffe served for 48 years as a teacher and principal at 11 Catholic schools. In 2000, she was named Distinguished Principal of the Year and in 2004, a Leadership Louisville Foundation Bingham Fellow.
Kate Barrett Wilson DMD, MD.– Medical Missionary – St. James class of 1966. Graduated from Sacred Heart in 1970. Undergraduate degree from University of Louisville in 1974. Finished Dental Degree in 1979, medical school in 2001, and internal medicine residency in 2004. Dr. Wilson practices Internal Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has missioned to over 30,000 people in Marovo Lagoon in the Solomon Islands as a dentist and physician.
Hank Rothgerber Ph.D. – College Professor – St James class of 1984. Established his reputation as a chess champion while still at St. James and St. Xavier. Earned a B.A. at Georgetown University, where he organized “Spring Break in Appalachia,” helping impoverished people in Eastern Kentucky. Dr. Rothgerber’s Ph.D. from Texas A & M led to a teaching career at Bellarmine and an international reputation for groundbreaking research on the psychology of making food choices, especially for omnivores and vegetarians.
