ST. JAMES SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES
School Committee Meeting
April 17, 2012
7:00-8:00 p.m.
In Attendance: Tom Schmitt, Pattie Dillon, Kelly Durrett (Teacher Rep.)
The meeting opened with prayer.
The committee discussed the current school budget. The budget is on target with remaining money that can be spent where needed. The committee looked at money spent on teacher substitutes. Currently, Mr. Murphy (7th/8th), Mr. Miller (library) and Ms. Smith (art) are being paid from this account. However, once full-time, the money can be pulled from the school budget itself.
The committee discussed changes for the upcoming school year in regard to the 7th and 8th grade classroom. Mrs. Humphreys is currently working with the 7th and 8th grades for 40 minutes, twice a week focusing on writing. Mrs. Humphries has 15+ years experience from St. Francis of Assisi as well as experience teaching at the college level. Mrs. Humphries has expressed interest in teaching 7th and 8th fulltime for the 2012-2013 school year.
The committee discussed the success of the recent Angelic Auction. The auction brought in more money than last year’s auction, which raised over $32,000. The committee discussed the benefit to having more sponsors for the auction in the future.
The current technology budget is $15,000. This past winter, we were able to get another Smartboard which will be installed in Mrs. Ely’s classroom (PreK).
The PTO currently has $25,594.74. This does not include the money raised by the Angelic Auction. The committee discussed different ideas to best utilize this money. The majority of this money will go toward replacing the current playground with new equipment, new ground and a new fence. Mrs. Yurt will also use some of this money to purchase items needed for Pre School-7th Grade Field Day.
The committee reviewed the QAC Summary Response. The board members seemed very pleased with the growth made at St. James over the past year. Future goals were also discussed to benefit the school.
The meeting concluded with a brief brainstorming of priorities for the school. Items listed and discussed were a new playground, revamping the school lunches, bathroom clean-up and changes, school cleanliness and a possible mural on the 2nd (top) floor of the school.
Meeting ended at 8:10. Next meeting in August, 2012
