Squire Boone Caverns Field Trip
Squire Boone Caverns Field Trip
One of the most popular field trips of the year is the kindergarten through fourth grade trip to Squire Boone's Cave near Corydon, Indiana. The cave was founded by Squire Boone with his more famous brother, Daniel Boone, in 1790 (hiding in it to escape hostile Indians so the story goes). Squire Boone died in 1810 and is buried nearby.
The students participated in a variety of activities besides a trek through the cave. There is a working grist mill with a miller ginding grain. They also experienced candle making and were given the opportunity to dip their own. Most adults know the value of lye soap but the students were totally fascinated with the making and scenting of the multi-purpose cleaner. The most popular shop for the students is always the candy shop where homemade fudge is cooked and spread right in front of them. Other activities were panning for "gold" and shopping in the gift shop. The day culminated with an outdoor picnic.
As always, many compliments were received by teachers for the excellent behavior of the students.
